I’ve been thinking about this lately, especially 2022 since this is the year I really want to get back to blogging. ICYMI, or maybe you’re new, I sort of went on hiatus for a big chunk of last year. And honestly, it’s been a few years since my blog just didn’t “fit” me correctly. Sort of like trying to fit into your elementary school clothes when you’re already in high school. It’s just not really possible. Unless your body just hasn’t changed, which I think isn’t usually the case, but even just your style changes with so many years in between
I started blogging, wow, at least eight years ago! I haven’t always had this blog but I always had A blog. I went through many ups and downs in my blogging journey, much insecurity, and that’s pretty much left me with this blog, A Nerdy Fujo Cries, which I actually very much adore. And it’s looking a bit bare, so this year I’ve told myself it’s time to fill it with many cute boys!
But before that, I felt like I had to put out a few disclaimers.
Good-bye to my straight couples
Or maybe not outright, but this is something that I’ve been meaning to do for a while but just never did. I always tell people I don’t like romance or slice of life stories but the truth is that that’s a lie. I really do love me some fluff. What I’m tired of is heterosexual romances and slice of life because if you give me two gays doing mundane things, I will cry.
So I’ve decided to just stop trying to “fit in” and watch (or read) all these anime and manga that everyone is super into. Plus, I was kind of tired of me writing reviews that were essentially, “Yeah this was cute, but not for me, but if you’re into XYZ, yeah, you’ll enjoy this.” No, I want to be emotional while writing my reviews and to constantly debate between properly reviewing or just smashing my keyboard
That doesn’t mean I won’t be reviewing het-stories, but that does mean I’m embracing my gay even more.
Off-topic, but the other day I saw an online conversation. Someone said they picked up X-title for the PWP and then someone said that they’re just fetishizing gay relationships and I just, I was slightly mindblown. Like, wow, are we not allowed to be horny? I don’t mind het-sex but like, it hasn’t been my immediate go-to in a few years. You do you guys.
Also, there will be more mature content on the blog because I like horny series ok, I’m a sexual being, let’s get that out of the way. But I especially say this because I have THIS ONE SERIES I’m hoping to review and oh boy, that’s a HOT FUCKIN TAMALE. And I love tamales.
More reviews, not just the “good” stories
I noticed that I mostly review manga and webcomics that left an impression on me. The ones that I enjoyed and loved, and I kind of didn’t bother reviewing the ones that “didn’t make the cut”. Part of the reason is that I just had trouble keeping up with the stuff I had to review, but I put out a poll the other day on Twitter asking for peoples’ opinions.
While I only got 5 votes, that’s enough for me. The majority said they’d like to see the reviews for as much as I’m willing to review.
The “problem” with this is that I read a lot (mostly tbh) of my manga and webcomics illegally. If this is something that bothers you just don’t interact with my content.
But if anyone is curious, I don’t just read illegally. I do end up supporting the authors in ways I’m able to. I do buy the Japanese volumes of series I love (which were +90% of the time untranslated), which I used to do via my local Kinokuniya store – they were very good at getting me copies of whatever book I wanted as long as I gave them the isbn – and that I do in other ways now. For webcomics, I do buy them through Lezhin and TappyToons (usually after the fact). I also have a Manta subscription because one of my favorite comics is on there and really the rest of their library is pretty useless to me (but that’s the only way I know how to support that one specific author). I also have a Futekiya subscription and that’s the only one I kind of like…
I know that there are a lot of digital ways of supporting authors now, especially in the BL world, but honestly, I sort of am refusing this. I just don’t like digital copies of things, which is slightly hilarious because I read digitally. Webcomics I have to concede because, well, they’re webcomics (but I went to the bookstore the other day and THEY HAD PRINT WEBCOMICS OMMMGGGGG, also, I did see some print English translations of certain webcomics and GODDDD IMMA CRY KILLING STALKINGGGG).
But not manga. I will buy them in physical form because I want to OWN them. I’m not into the whole subscription-based stuff.
Also, I want to cry at how Renta! books cost the same as physical books. I will link to their site because that’s where some of the English translations are at but isn’t part of the reason (I could be totally and completely off) that books are digital that they want to save on printing costs? So wouldn’t they be just a bit cheaper? IDK. But I’d rather just buy a physical copy
Will I ever stop reading illegally? Maybe not. But I’m hoping that in a year’s time, this number will go down by more than half. If you know, you know
p.s. I don’t think this is a surprise for a lot of my older followers but I just wanted to put it out there for anyone new
In conclusion, there will be more gays. I probably won’t be reviewing as much anime, maybe. I just haven’t been able to get back into anime for a while now (plus, I’m bummed I can’t screenshot stuff, what is the point of reviewing something if I can’t use pictures?! *cries*) but who knows. I won’t make promises on that front.
