February Book Haul! No Space on the Shelf… (Manga Haul #10)

Hey guys! Here I am again, spending my money after only just receiving my check…

If you guys saw, I posted a picture of some of my buys on Twitter, but I knew I just had to tell you all on here! So yesterday my brother and I went to get our car’s oil changed and tires checked. Since we were pretty far out, I decided we could stop by at Kinokuniya to pick up my books. It was not on the way over but I figured that if we were out already, I wouldn’t mind driving around. And the store had contacted me about my order coming in so if anything, that was my excuse for going.

As we were leaving the dealer, I then randomly thought, I wonder if there’s a Half Priced Books around here…It turns out there was! So in addition to Kinokuniya, we also stopped at Half Priced Books. There’s actually a HPBs ‘near’ our house, but I wanted to check out a new one, just to see what their selections was like. Checking this place out really depleted my wallet

Now, before I start showing you pictures and giving titles, this will be the first part of a two part post. All the books here will be manga and light novels, while part 2 will have the novels I bought (yes, I read books without pictures sometimes :P), as well as explaining why it took me so long to finally get them/read them

Let’s begin!

I’ll start with my Kinokuniya purchase first! If you guys have noticed, I’ve been collecting the Daiya no A books for a while now. The last time I went to Kinokuniya, I had ordered books 7-9 and they finally arrived~ Look at my precious Miyuki and Sawamura (oh there’s Furuya too)

Usually when I go to Kinokuniya, I browse through the yaoi section, which is very tiny…and I usually don’t find anything. Same thing happened this time around, except that instead of immediately heading to the cashier to pick up my order, I decided to check what other books they had for Daiya. And that’s when I found book 2 for Act II, which I bought as well 😀

Volume 2 for Act II is the one on the right with Furuya on the cover. Now, even though I own these books, I haven’t actually gotten around to reading them. I did browse through the first few books because I had read a few chapters online, however, I don’t want to run into spoilers so I’m holding off on browsing through these. I really need to read this soon!

Next up is a bit of a long one. In keeping with my sports obsession, I decided to buy the whole manga series of Eyeshield 21.

I’d see this wrapped stack at the HPBs near our house and had passed it up, however, ever since I saw it I couldn’t help thinking about it. I’d wonder, should I have bought it? Then, as we were out yesterday and my brother got a call from HPB saying his book had come in, I made up my mind. If it was still at the store I was going to buy it.

At $100 for 37 volumes, I think it was a pretty good deal since it’s $270 off the list price. But why did I buy this? Well, my brother had been recommending I watch the anime for a while now and I always kind of said OK but didn’t actually consider doing it. Especially not when I went to AWA and they showed clips of the anime. It was terrible! The animation was old, the art was totally not my style, and just…I was definitely not going to watch.

However, at Yaoi-con I remember an artist who had been selling some sports merchandise. She had done this cute pink pencil bag and I asked her from where the characters were from. She told me Eyeshield 21 and we started talking for a bit. She vehemently told me not to watch the anime but to read the manga because it was so much better! Being the manga lover that I am, I thought, sure why not? It’s faster and I don’t have to cringe.

Of course, I also don’t know how the art in the manga is like, however, the covers give me hope! *crosses fingers*

AND, this’ll also be part of my in progress sports manga collection! It’ll include Daiya, Eyeshield 21, Kuroko, and Haikyuu!! I’m so excited!! (•́⌄•́๑)૭✧

Up next we have a couple random volumes

The titles in this pile are Magical Girl Apocalypse by Kentaro Sato, The Voices of a Distant Star by Makoto Shinkai and art by Sumomo Yumeka, Junjo Romantica v2 by Shungiku Nakamura, Blue Dragon: Ral Grad by Tsuneo Takano and art by Takeshi Obata, Thunderbold Boys by Asami Toujou, and X omnibus v2 by CLAMP.

One of the things I always do when I go to HPB is go to the manga section and check out what books they have. Some stores have more yaoi while others have nothing, and while the HPB close to my house has a meh manga section, this one close to the dealer had quite a few titles I wanted!

For Magical Girl Apocalypse, I decided to pick it up because The Huge Anime Fan was having a giveaway a while back and this book was listed as one of the items. I had never heard of the book before her post and even the author doesn’t ring a bell. So I picked it up, browsed through it, and immediately put it into my buying pile. The pages are filled with gore and horror and I’m really excited and scared about what this book contains.

The Voices of a Distant Star, as well as Blue Dragon: Ral Grad, were instant pickups. I recognized the artists for both manga and knew I would be buying them no matter what! Sumomo Yumeka has beautiful art and I actually own some other titles with them as the artist such as Himeyuka & Rozione’s Story (a short story collection), Tengu-jin, Same Cell Organism, and The Day  I Became a Butterfly. I recommend all of these books!!

And the last few were bought to complete my manga collection. For Junjo Romantica, volume 2 was the only title I’d been missing since forever!! Every time I tried to buy it online, it would cost more than the list price or it just wasn’t available, so when I walked into HPB and saw it I immediately nabbed it. As for X, well, I own omnibus volumes 1, 3-5 so really the only one I was missing was this giant one and buying it at $20 from Amazon wasn’t really something I wanted to do. Now I can actually sit down and read the series, which is the sequel to Tokyo Babylon, a short manga series that just left me wanting more.

Thunderbolt Boys was a bit different in that I’ve never heard of the title, the artist, and it wasn’t recommended. The reason I bought it was because it looked okay and I need to read more yaoi @_@ Yeah, that’s a legit reason, haha!

And now for the last pile! Trying to expand my light novel collection, I decided to buy these lovely volumes! The Pandora Hearts: Caucus Race and Seraph of the End books were ordered through Amazon, since they’re newer books. I haven’t really heard much about the Pandora Hearts LNs, other than them being short stories centered around the big families of the series. Of course, this means I need to reread and finish Pandora Hearts since I stopped a while back.

Seraph of the End is actually one I’m particularly excited about! When I was reading the manga, I always wondered about Guren’s past, his dead girlfriend, and the Demon Series weapons. Here, in these pages, I will finally get an explanation!!

Spice and Wolf is actually the only LN series I’ve actually started (outside of yaoi) and I’m slowly collecting the volumes. Whenever I find them cheap at the store I pick them up with the hopes that I’ll own all of the volumes eventually.

Out of these LNs, Another is the only title I know nothing about. I know there’s an anime for it, a manga (I own the first volume), and I think it has to do with mystery/murder, possibly horror? Still, I bought it because it was cheap, the cover looked cool, and I figured I’d read it

OK…this post got MUCH longer than what I was expecting. I hope I didn’t bore you all with my shopping adventures. I swear, it’s only with books where I don’t mind staying at a store for hours and then blabbering about it 😛

Of course, as I keep buying I’ve come to realize I’ve run out of space. Like this purchase, I don’t know what I’m going to do with more than half these books! For now they’re lounging on my desk and the floor…I would get another shelf but it doesn’t really fit in my room anymore OTL

Ah well, I’ll figure something out! Until next time~

  2. 100 big ones for so much manga!!! Ooh, a Seraph of the End extension and a Pandora Hearts LN? I’ve heard about these two, and I plan to pick the up as well as soon as I finish reading the original for both or at least catch up enough >.< My brother just picked up the novel for Another after I showed him the anime this past fall. Hope that's good, too!

  3. Such a good collection!
I wanted to ask you what is the normal price of a yaoi manga? Because I need to start saving money up nowww.

    1. Well it’s more expensive than normal manga, somewhere in the $13-15 range but I get a lot of my stuff for cheaper (unless it’s new then it’s pretty much that price)

At conventions a lot of people sell them for ~$5 or at least half price, just need to find them. Swap Meets are a good place to find cheaper manga in general (again, at conventions) and sometimes certain places like Akadot Retail will have sales for some of the older titles

I also find some on Amazon. Used copies are usually cheaper and they come in near new conditions so that’s always good (though sometimes you get library copies and they have all the stickers and such on the spine)

      1. The few yaoi mangas I see online are priced between $13-18 range, so they aren’t that overpriced I guess.
We have like 2 anime/comic conventions in a year, and I live in New Delhi, India’s capital. We only get a few shounen jump, shoujo beat, and if lucky kodansha at the cons.
The mangas on amazon are sometimes cheap, but the shipping is also so expensive that in the end I can’t afford them.
My birthday is coming up so, I guess I ll buy 1-2 volumes of the yaoi mangas available on Indian online bookstores.
We don’t even have a freaking Barnes and Noble here. TT TT

      2. Ah, my brother has Prime so I usually buy my stuff through his account for free and fast shipping. I think it only counts for certain items though :/

With items that don’t qualify yes the shipping can be dreadful >_<

      3. Ah, it’s a membership from Amazon where you pay some amount every year (i think it’s like $50 or $60?) and you get certain perks like 2 day shipping and free shipping. I think there’s also better prices/early bird stuff during sales (but I could be wrong).

I only use it for the shipping stuff https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DBYBNEE?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=42852692325&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10835507433197109639&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_cp4b2ukra_e
