Give a physical description of yourself. If possible, name or put a picture of a character (not restricted to anime) who you physically resemble.
What do I look like? Tricky, tricky question! I don’t think I’ve encountered a character in anime that looks like me yet but when I was in elementary school (and part of high school) my friends used to call me Pocahontas, so yeah…I don’t really agree…
But I’ll leave a picture! Basically, I’ve got black hair that reaches past my shoulders, dark brown eyes, and an indifferent look to me. My face is chunky, sometimes I wear glasses (if I don’t then all I see are blobs of color), and I’ve got this Native American complexion (I don’t know if I have NA roots). I’m also overweight and am 5′ 4″.
I also usually wear hoodies or baggy shirts and carry a bag all the time! Right now it’s my Black Butler S2 bag, haha. I rarely ever have my hair down (only if my head starts hurting or I’m going to bed), I prefer shorts with leggings but also like jeans and pajama pants, and I have to look at the floor otherwise I get wobbly and start tripping (not that I don’t randomly trip sometimes either way).
What is your favorite anime/manga genre and why?
I think I prefer to watch fantasy anime rather than slice of life/school type shows. There’s just something about the fantastical that I really enjoy. And by fantasy I don’t mean epic fantasy with dragons and kingdoms and different creatures (though it could be). Just anything that may have an otherworldly element.
No sci-fi though, can’t follow all the science stuff, which is probably why I’m not that into mecha shows. Other genres I like: action, adventure, suspense, some horror, and recently I’ve been into the sports genre. I also don’t really like humor/comedy driven stuff because then I get SUPER embarrassed (I stopped watching Wolf Girl and Black Prince at episode 1 and Beelzebub at episode 4 because of this)! I don’t mind it if it’s on the side or if it’s sarcastic-funny (in fact, I prefer this) 🙂
I also like some romance shows but I don’t particularly seek them out. It just kind of happens sometimes. I can probably count all the romance/school anime I’ve watched with 10 fingers…or maybe 5…hmmmm, haha. Oh! And are mind games a whole other genre? Because I really like those too!
For manga it’s about the same and for yaoi I’ll read just about anything! I am really picking about art though so even if it’s a genre I like, if I don’t like the visuals I probably won’t continue 😛
Why anime/manga out of so many other mediums of entertainment?
Honestly, I don’t even know myself. It kind of just happened, it’s almost like I never grew out of my childhood wants of cartoons. And there’s so much diversity in the genre that I’m content with everything as it is!
I still watch actual people-movies and every now and then a novella if there’s any good ones (currently following No Creo En Los Hombres/I Don’t Believe In Men, and I have to say this title confuses me. I’m thinking it should be called something like Douchey Liars and Multi-millionaire Jealous Wife who is out to ruin lives). Sometimes I’ll watch a random show but they’re not really in my priority list, don’t need more addictions! My last one was The Killing, which I didn’t finish but that I highly recommend if you’re into mystery/police shows.
As for manga, I’m also not sure. I guess I just like the style of it/diversity. I was never really a fan of the bulky, muscled characters from Marvel and all those American comics (in fact I’m not really into heroes much). But then I checked out a manga and was instantly hooked.
While extremely rare, I have delved a little outside of the usual manga style. For example, I like Starfighter (yaoi), the style of M. A. Lamoreaux (I read The Legend of Johnny Appleseed when I worked at the library), and I’m kind of liking The Dark Earth (yaoi), though this one I’m a bit iffy about. Art for me is a big thing and I only like certain styles so yeah…haha. I also have a hard time reading non-manga, like, which way do I read this?!
(Borrowing the question) How did you come up with your blog name?
Well, when I first started this blog I was really nervous about making a title. I’ve never been creative in that aspect so I was afraid that it wouldn’t properly convey what I wanted (and I’m still worried).
I wanted something that would convey that I was an anime fan but also a fujoshi, because the plan was to write my thoughts on yaoi manga that I read. I tried to look through other blogs to see what people were using and found a lot of X’s Bookshelf or X’s Anime Blog and I didn’t really want that. For one, to me a shelf implies books but what if I want to write about anime? But having just anime in the title felt like it would exclude manga…
What about conventions, how could I convey that? What if I wanted to step outside of anime for a bit, was that possible? In the end I went with My Fujoshi Life because it just seemed right and I had to pick something otherwise I’d never be able to start. It was also available, haha. But yes, that’s how this came to be!
Oh, one more thing, I also didn’t want to use any of the names that real physical people know me as because that would be embarrassing >.> Be like, so I found this thing Pikachu… and I’ll be like, uhhh…it’s not what you think! xD
What is your favorite book? Why must I pick from my lovely babies?!
Ok, let’s see, I really like this children’s book called Fortunately, The Milk by Neil Gaiman. First stumbled upon it when I was working at the library (I was in the youth department) and I was making sure all the books were in order.
I saw it, really liked the cover and just had to check it out. It’s basically about a father and his two kids who get up for breakfast one day and find that there’s no milk. The father goes out to buy some and only forever later does he show up. He tells his kids what happened and it’s hilarious as he talks about an inventor Stegosaurus, escaping pirates, aliens, and the space-time continuum! Totally recommend it no matter what age you are. And the illustrations inside are gorgeous! It’s kind of got this Tim Burton feel to it. It’s not yet part of my collection but it will be one day…
I also really like the Artemis Fowl series (though I seriously didn’t like that ending, it practically wasn’t Artemis there anymore). A friend in eighth grade told me to hold onto the first book and that’s what I literally did. I didn’t know that was code for read it. I think I ended up not reading it until almost a year later. The Goblin Wood Trilogy is also really good and it’s about goblins, a supposed witch, and a knight who is out to capture her for the sake of saving his brother. Really focuses on the characters and the things happening in that world, hardly any romance (until the third book, kind of).
Dragon’s Bait, which I read so many times because it’s such a short book. It’s about a girl who is accused of being a witch and because of all the excitement her father gets a heart attack. He dies and she’s sent to the mountains to be eaten by a dragon except that she ends up teaming up with him to get revenge on her village. And there are a lot more!!
As for manga and light novels, I really enjoyed No. 6! I think it was the first light novel series I’d ever read and it was amazing. I don’t believe it’s been translated to English yet but someone online translated it and that’s where I read it. As for manga…well, I really like Tokyo Ghoul, TG:re, Haikyuu, Hakkenden, Skip Beat, Caramel (BL), Hana to Usagi (BL), Kurokami, etc!!
Do you have any future plans or goals for your blog? If so, what are they? If not, why not?
Well, I wanted to start writing my thoughts on actual anime essays and nonfiction books, which I did for Mechademia but I haven’t really continued that…
too lazy to go to my school and pick up books so I’m waiting for classes to start (just started school so the plan is to pick up some books for this). Maybe find more non-review type topics to write about but I’m so bad at that stuff…
I also started blogging over at UnimeTV so I do have some assigned topics over there (that are really different from what I do here), which I’ll be reblogging here. Other than that I don’t really know T__T Any suggestions on what you guys would like to see more of or something would be totally great!
My other blog on the other hand, is going to get a lot of new content. I mostly use it to write about school and places I roadtrip to but I also want to start adding in book reviews, discussions, and have I have this ‘Explore Chicago’ project I want to do (it will help me get familiar with my own city, I’m such a hermit).
What is your favorite subject or area of study and why?
I like school in general and if I didn’t have to worry about grades and money then I would say everything except business (some exceptions).
Still, I do have a preference for art, math, and chorus. I really like math because I feel it’s fixed. There’s only one answer to problems even though there can be more ways of solving. I don’t like geometry though, my worst math grade ever (A-). I’m more of an algebra person but I can’t do mental math, need to write things down. I’m actually really sad I don’t need to take any more math classes (since I’m an art major).
I really like art because that’s just something I’ve always liked. I’m a bit iffy on the art I’m studying now since it seems to be geared towards making us gallery artists (which I’m not too excited about) but I like playing with the materials and just making things. Recently I’ve been interested in digital art but all I really have to play with is SketchbookXmobile. I also have Photoshop but I don’t know how to use it much but I’m supposed to take this one class this quarter that goes into explaining it.
And chorus, well, I really like to sing, haha! I wish I could read music though but all I can do is imitate. I took a class in high school and somehow got into some advanced songs but only that. Since our class was the last of the day the teacher usually gave us free time while she focused on her advanced singers, which sucked because there were a lot of girls who wanted to learn more.
Other stuff I really like and wish I could study (maybe later): languages (I really like the idea of translating), writing (like stories and stuff), technology (computers), psychology, and communication. I’m sure there’s other stuff but I’m blanking out right now…
Oh god this post got super long, I’m sorry! >.< And here are my nominees 🙂 Sorry if you’ve already been nominated once before. Like always, even if I didn’t nominate you, feel free to answer the questions if you’d like :3 In a post or in the comments section
